Orphan of the Quest by Akril15 Orphan of the Quest by Akril15
The life of a hero certainly is no walk in the park. Stroll through the forest, and you get ambushed by not one, but two cheetaurs! No problem, you dispatch them with ease and sell their claws to the local healer for a fine sum.

But there’s always more than what meets the eye…

Maybe this was why I could never get into Quest for Glory, or any RPG, for that matter. I just didn’t like the concept of killing all these creatures, especially cheetaurs, which I think are beautiful, though somewhat oddly formed, animals (even though they don’t look like cheetahs at all. The individual defending the QfG orphan in the picture, Xandra, is half cheetah and half human, so she has a very good reason to defend the poor little guy.)

Eco-Geeks and RPGs, never the twain shall meet.

*narrows eyes* I'm not a big fan of this picture. Really, I'm not. You're saying everyone who plays Quest for Glory and engages in combat (in particular Fighters) is a bloodthirsty monster with no empathy, just because we kill the cheetaurs.

I notice something. You don't say this for the Saurus enemies, Purple or Rex. You don't say this for the Trolls. You don't say this for the Ogre guarding the cave. You don't say this for the Mantrays. You don't even say this for the Brigands, who are HUMAN, and they probably DO have comrades and families out there who'd miss them dearly (some of them anyway). But just because it's a beautiful creature, that means we MUST leave it alone! You know what happens when you try to run from these things? They will KILL you, whether you engage in battle willingly or not! Plus, you DO realize these creatures aren't real, right? If this were real life and Cheetaurs actually existed, I'd probably be on your side. But I'm not. It's a game, nothing more.

If they attack you, it's not murder, it's SELF DEFENCE! It's not like you can go actively hunting for hm, either. They find YOU, not the other way around.

Gloriana's a tough land. Beautiful, but tough. Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do. You HAVE to survive somehow! The cheetaurs, cubs or no, will show you NO mercy if they claw and snap at you. Also, being attacked by two cheetaurs at once is a death sentence. They hit hard, almost as bad as Trolls! I have not found a single time fighting them where I didn't get hurt badly and hope to God I wouldn't encounter another that night because they were deadly animals.

I will say one thing though, to not end this on a negative note. I LOVE the font and drawing of the cheetaur itself. I just really don't like the message that goes with it.

While I do acknowledge your critique, as of this writing, this picture is now ten years old. A lot of the views expressed in it and the description have changed considerably since I first drew it.

*nods* Fair enough. I really DO love your art though! You're an awesome artist! It's just this ONE picture that bugged me, is all.

Frankly, I'm just glad I found someone who loved KQ7! :)

Sorry if I made you mad or disrespected you in any way.

What changed though?

Thank you.

I've mostly come to more of an understanding of the QfG games in general and determined that they're just not my kind of games. I also try to focus more on working on games of my own instead of criticizing small elements of others.

I'm a huge fan of Quest for Glory, I didn't mind so much having to kill trolls and stuff (and they are tough!) but if I let myself think about it too much...I hate having to kill cheetaurs. I love them but the hero has a point and you never see any cheetaur children in the game(s)...soo....

I have mixed feelings about this piece (and the games themselves lol but overall I love quest for glory). On the one hand, I do love animals and creatures like the cheetaur but on the other hand I also understand the "hero" point of view and if you do nothing....you die...you run away...you'd probably be considered a coward by other adventurers. Plus, you can make some money by selling off the claws. The paladin path didn't come until later....I'm sure a paladin would've gotten honor points for avoiding them and just running away to let them (and himself!) live.

Lovely artwork.

Well, that's one "sorta" ecologist, what about the others? And where do they clash with RPGs?

I mean that Ecologists show up in Space Quest several times, championing animal rights. It is a humorous game series, so be ready for some low blows on both sides...

Hm, I certainly don't remember any ecologists showing up in SQ...and where do RPGs show up?

You haven't really seen Space Quest V, did you? The sexy blonde (woman) would be the ecologist... sorta...

lol, I'm all for you're preference... but have you ever thought of.. running away from the wild animal (cheetaur in this case) thats chasing you? You dont HAVE to fight anything in this game. Extra points yeah, but the story is what matters :)

But more importantly I love the picture :) Poor cheetaur :( Soo sad and cute :)

Thanks. I did try running away from all these beasties as soon as I figured out that you could run (this was QfG1 EGA), but I got so tired of doing that, wandering aimlessly and trying to figure out what to do next that I stopped playing the game.

:D Thats good, I hope you don't take offense to my comment, these games were, and still are a great part of my life and I feel bad for someone to miss out when it can be avoided. But at least you tried :)

Yes, but then I would probably be assaulted by all the QfG fans...I'd hate to give ~deviantquest a less than stellar reputation for hosting pictures that (lightly) bash certain games/genres.

Heh, ya know, I was wondering that myself recently. They don't LOOK like normal Cheetahs...unless there are black variants that I've never heard of. Very strange.
