Unicorn-K'i-lin Hybrids

I've got my old HP PercisionScan back, and I don't know what made me abandon it for that "freeze your computer in 30 minutes or less" Epson All-in-One or the "instant slobbered-on picture effects" HP All-in-One. It felt so good to scan an image with a minimum of frustration that took less than five minutes to refine until it looked almost exactly like the original image. I'm keeping this old clunker with me, till death or mechanical failure do us part.

more or less gets credit for this drawing. She mentioned creating hybrid eastern/western unicorns in my "Young Dragon Hybrid" sketch, and I was sketching out unicorn hybrids before I could stop myself.

Anyway, it's another pair of mythical hybrids, named with the traditional hybrid naming convention: a unilin (western unicorn father, k'i-lin* mother) and a k'i-licorn (k'i-lin father, western unicorn mother). The one fathered by a unicorn has the single horn, the overall same bone structure and the pink mammalian skin; while the one sired by a k'i-lin has the staglike horns and more serpentine, low-slung body of its male parent, as well as the slightly reptilian (yet scaleless) skin color and texture. Pick out the rest of the interspersed traits on your own, if you like.

I didn't realize how comparatively dull the k'i-licorn's color scheme would be compared to the unilin's until I started coloring. I thought of coloring those weird lacey things sprouting from in front of its legs red instead of green (what the heck ARE those things?? I've seen them in every k'i-lin rendering I've found!), but since all the traditional pictures have those colored green, I decided to keep the unbalanced look of the picture in favor of keeping things traditional.


*The eastern "unicorn's" name in China. It's called the Kirin in Japan (look for it on the Kirin Beer label).
