The Zebras of TLKFAA by Akril15 The Zebras of TLKFAA by Akril15
One of the largest group pictures I've made in recent years: a collection of zebras from The Lion King Fan Art Archive (some of which are probably roaming on DevART as well). Though most of the characters are (unsurprisingly) lions, there are quite a few zebras there too. Hey, those carnivores have to have something to eat, right? (Just kidding. ;) )

So I decided to draw as many zebras that caught my eye as I dared. There are 13 altogether. Here are the names of the characters and their creators in case you can't make them out:

Top row: Nino (Wolverina), Warsaw (Neeka), Hullabaloo (Kipcha), Run (Quill), Sakitu (Ice Clover Epona), Stripey (Saft), Lio (Makani), Mbatobato (Chui)
Bottom row: Oralie (Kelt), Johari (Kastse), Albino (the white one, Pegasuss), Mteketezo (Bruyere), Zig (me)

I keep trying out new drawing methods to minimize my computer time. For this drawing, I started out with a very small sketch (about 6" long), scanned it into the computer, tinted it blue, enlarged it, printed it out, inked it with a drawing pen, scanned that in, removed the blue, and finally colored it.

And amazingly, as many zebras as I found on that archive, none of them had walnuts (the round, bare "warts" that real zebras have on their inner forelegs), even the faintly realistic ones. Oh well.

Aww...fav'd! Probably a stupid question but what are the little grey ovals on the inside of their legs?

I don't know what their proper name is; they're usually called "walnuts". They appear on horses' legs too. (Thanks, by the way!)

What are they there for, is it like a dog's dew claw?

My mistake, they're called chestnuts. I did a search on them and found a site that says that nobody is sure why they exist, but they may be remnants of the pads that were under the toes of a very early ancestor of modern equines.

Very interesting, thank you for that nugget of info!

Warsaw? Like capital of Poland?

If "yes" zebras form Poland are so happy! :D

Uf not... we are happy too - cute pic!

Heh...I don't know why that zebra is named "Warsaw". :) Thank you!

This picture doesn't make sense. All I see is a bunch of stripes.

*removes lion-vision goggles* Oh. Never mind.

Nice job! The zebras were never this expressive in The Lion King. :D It's also smart of you to include biological details that other people missed.

Yep, I try to be as accurate as possible whenever I can. Drawing all of these guys together, I can see how lions would have trouble perceiving them. Not only are they wildly striped, but milticolored as well!
