Pony Species

Description

Various G1 ponies based on some very obscure unicorn species, as well as a couple of pegasus variants. Again, because I can.

Priassopi (Twice As Fancy Pony): I guess technically this wouldn't be a unicorn, but a "bicorn". The reason why I made this pony a Twice As Fancy one should be pretty obvious.

Ethiopian Pegasus (Sweetheart Sister Pony): EPs are gazelle-like creatures with wings and two horns on their heads. I chose this type of pony since their antelope-like build seems to fit with their African origins. (The flowers in her symbol are Kniphofias, a.k.a. red-hot pokers, which are native to Africa.)

Camphur (Rainbow Curl Pony): A unicorn with a very short mane and tail and the back feet of a duck. Since I was complaning how the one Rainbow Curl pegasus had cool rainbow-colored wings and the one Rainbow Curl unicorn didn't have something equally cool like a rainbow colored-horn, I decided to give this pony one.

Winged Sea-Unicorn (Fancy Mermaid Pony): No, I am not making this thing up. This is/was an actual animal used in heraldry. I've heard it called an "Almaricorn", but since I haven't been able to find any reliable sources regarding the etymology of that name, I'll just call it by its "common" name. The Fancy Mermaid Ponies looked vaguely like hippocampi, which made them ideal candidates to base this odd creature on. Their symbols are on the heart on their chests, and I gave this one a a symbol with colors representing fire, earth, air and water. I was inspired by LadyMoondancer's beautiful story "Fire, Air, Water...", which links each element to each of the main G1 pony species: sea ponies: water, pegasi: air, unicorns: fire, earth ponies: earth. Since this pony is a combination of all four species (sort of), I figured that such a symbol would be pretty fitting.

Macrodipteryx: A pegasus with pennants on its wings, modeled on the Standard-Winged Nightjar.

Bombycilla: A pegasus with "blobs" on its feathers like the Cedar and Bohemian Waxwings.

El Alicornio (Twinkle-Eye Pony): A.k.a., El Alicornio de Cantabria. While I still have some issues about the word "alicorn" being used to describe a winged unicorn (confusion with the term used for a unicorn's horn, not grammatically correct, blah blah blah), there actually is a winged unicorn species with that name...it just has wings on its feet (darn it, that's not what "feathered hooves" are!). I tried to do a little research on this thing, but eventually hit a dead end after eventually getting directed to a book written in Spanish that wasn't available online.

This is really cool! The El Alicornio one is so clumsy-looking and cute :D
