A very loose Lion King/Thursday Next crossover...
It's a little hard to explain what the term "eradicated" means, but in short, it refers to going back in time and discreetly "removing" an individual. In some cases, memories of the individual in question can be left in the minds of one or more people (intentionally or unintentionally). It makes (a little bit) more sense if you've read the Thursday Next books (esp. Lost in a Good Book). It just seemed like a good idea at the time...a movie where all the TLK lions have strange, distorted colors and oddly shaped bodies isn't just a wierded-out sequel...that HAS to be a parallel universe! Vitani's been sideslipped!! Bahh...I spend four days on this, and it's too large to be uploaded and entered into the "Twist of Plot" contest at [link]. Drat. |

Blöh, it's png. I haven't figured out an easy way to save DeviantArt .png files on my computer, they always get saved as a blank image. Oh, well. *goes searching for the correct file in temporary internet files folder*
It's basically an incredibly brilliant series of books by Jasper Fforde staring a woman named Thursday Next. It's hard to really say what genre these books belong to. There's a bit of sci-fi, a bit of fantasy, a bit of mystery, adventure and romance, and the amount of topics and subplots the author manages to lump together is just astounding. There's parallel universes, space-age technology, time travel, vampires, werewolves, reengineered species (thylacines, great auks, dodos*), apocalypses, an evil multinational corporation, a whole new universe inside books...everything I could ask for in a series and more. It all seemed too good to be true at times.
The only problem with these books is that after reading them, you might find books written by authors that were compared to Jasper Fforde a bit...well...dissatisfying. For a while, I was frustrated and confused as to why I didn't like Terry Pratchett's novels when I first read a fair number of them (since I like fantasy and one or two authors that have been compared to him). But when I asked around at the Fforde Fforum, everyone that responded to my query admitted to feeling disappointed if they read Pratchett's novels AFTER reading Jasper Fforde's novels. I feel so much better now.
Sure, Vitani is nothing like Thursday (the only similarities being that Thursday has two older brothers, one of which died tragically, and admits that she is "no beauty"), but the concept of Tanabi being "eradicated" and Vitani consequently being thrust into a strangely different parallel reality was too good a crossover opprotunity to pass up (Someone very close to Thursday is eradicated in the TN series).
*Thursday has a pet dodo, hence the presence of one in this drawing. They say "plock" in her world.
